To be honest I really don't know how I feel about this article on Yahoo. I'm all for really cool crime fighting techniques and even more for preventing crime before it happens but it's just a weird concept to see one of these in schools. I mean imagine a robot voice saying things like, "where. is. your. hall. pass." It just kinda creeps me out.
I say that jokingly but it's not too far fetched to think that school officials would use this stuff for their advantage just as the "geeky" kids in school would try to reprogram them. I don't think it would be all bad though because it would keep some of our officers off the street and out of harms way. Behind every one of these machines (at least at this point in development) there has to be some sort of human interaction on the other end, even if it is just to watch a screen.
Bearing all this in mind our kids are going to grow up in a world that looks more like the Jetsons and Minority Report than the Walton's and that is both exhilarating and depressing at the same time. I hope we don't lose that home spun feel in the midst of all of our gadgets.
Honorably,
-Larry
